Erin Downey, MPH, ScD
Erin Downey, MPH, ScD has worked within strengthening crises response for national health care systems for more than 15 years. She is currently serving as Health Adviser within the Health Unit, at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), for the Health Care in Danger (HCiD) Initiative. Dr. Downey leads the Community of Concern, convened by the ICRC, and is integrating HCiD operational practices as they apply to implementing health protection strategies within the ICRC Health Unit. She plays a seminal role in mobilizing health organizations at global/regional levels to carry out activities at national levels so that health protection frameworks can be strengthened.
Dr. Downey is also a Senior Fellow at Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and former Vice President of Congress for the World Association for Disaster Emergency Medicine. In 2015, she served as Health System Transition Advisor for USAID in Guinea, in response to the Ebola crisis. Previous to this, she was at the U.S. Department of State, Office of the Geographer and Global Issues, where she was the principal briefer to the Assistant Secretary and Executive Officers for the Bureau of Populations, Refugees and Migration.
